NCTRC Awarded Re-Accreditation from NCCA

The NCTRC Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist Certification Program was awarded re-accreditation status by the National Commission for Certifying Agencies (NCCA) for a five-year period, expiring March 31, 2013. NCTRC, which was founded in 1981, received its third five-year continuation since its initial NCCA Accreditation in 1997. NCTRC serves as a professional certification organization acting in the public interest by establishing and enforcing education, examination, experience and ethics requirements for the therapeutic recreation profession. Currently, the CTRS designation is represented in all 50 states and throughout Canada and nine other countries.

NCTRC received renewal of NCCA accreditation for its CTRS Certification Program by submitting an application demonstrating the program's compliance with the NCCA's Standards for the Accreditation of Certification Programs. NCCA is the accrediting body of the National Organization for Competency Assurance (NOCA). Since 1987, the NCCA has been accrediting certifying programs based on the highest quality standards in professional certification to ensure that programs adhere to modern standards of practice in the certification industry. To view the NCCA standards visit www.noca.org. NCCA accredited programs certify individuals in a wide range of professions and occupations including nurses, financial professionals, respiratory therapists, counselors, emergency technicians, crane operators and more. NOCA has over 350 members, more than 90 of which have accredited programs.

NOCA's mission is to promote excellence in competency assurance for practitioners in all occupations and professions. NCCA was created in 1987 by NOCA as a commission whose mission is to help ensure the health, welfare, and safety of the public through the accreditation of a variety of certification programs/organizations that assess professional competence. NCCA uses a peer review process to: establish accreditation standards; evaluate compliance with these standards; recognize organizations and programs which demonstrate compliance; and serve as a resource on quality certification.

NCTRC Represented at OIPR International Colloquium

NCTRC served as an invited attendee at the Annual Meeting of the International Organization of Psychomotricity and Relaxation (OIPR) held in Paris, France, July 2-5, 2008. As an invited guest, all NCTRC expenses associated with the conference were paid by the host organization. In addition to the five-day colloquium, the OIPR also sponsored a five day workshop for psychomotricians working in the field to advance their clinical skills. NCTRC was represented by Bob Riley, CTRS, Executive Director of NCTRC and Maridith Janssen, CTRS, Associate Professor, CSU-LB, and current Chair of the NCTRC Standards Hearing Committee.

Janssen and Riley presented two academic sessions during the Colloquium and attended several administrative meetings involving OIPR founding members. The highlight of the visit was the opportunity to exchange information with OIPR delegates representing 14 membership countries from Europe and Latin America. Many similarities were found to exist between Recreation Therapy and Psychomotricity, both in terms of professional preparation and clinical practice. NCTRC expects to continue an associative relationship with the OIPR in hopes of developing important international contacts that will potentially increase the understanding of TR/RT beyond its current North American borders.
